5 Tips for traveling alone

While traveling gives you that relieving sense of freedom, know that there also are hazards that could be present or which could arise without you expecting them. Different countries are stunning and striking, but you cannot totally focus on their visuals without considering that just like in your homeland, other countries have crime rates too. There are thieves and crooks too no matter how beautiful those places might be. You should still and always be careful. Being mindful and vigilant is necessary. Here are five essential safety tips for traveling alone.

1. Be aware and alert

You are enjoying yourself so much and having the best time of your life! It seems that nothing can stop you from having fun and from making the most out of your leisure trip. You are living in the moment, and relishing every second of it. That’s awesome, but remember, you cannot be careless while doing so. Even venues of five-star services and luxury escapes are not exempted from the possibility of harm, although they thoroughly maintain utmost security.

Be aware of your surroundings wherever you travel to.  Look around, and be vigilant. Be alert to respond immediately and smartly to any sign of danger. Be quick to think of what to do when in the middle of something suspicious or harmful.

2. Be confident

Personal safety can also be maintained when you are confident. Be confident as you travel solo. Do not be hesitant or afraid to walk around and explore – these things are an inevitable part of traveling. Although there are some things that make first-time travelers hesitate and scared, do your best to overcome them. Wear your best confidence for traveling, so you can enjoy it more while staying safe.

When reaching out to people whose help you need, be confident that you can speak to them. When traveling to places unknown to you, be confident that though the place is foreign to you, you can learn, adapt and enjoy it like it’s your own place.

3. Practice self-defense skills

People around can help you when you are in the middle of danger but not always because you will never know when some saviors are around or not. Be your own savior then. Learn and practice self-defense skills that you can use in case of danger caused by delinquents.

Even in other countries, crimes exist, and it’s very helpful that you know how to protect yourself regardless of whether you are a female or a male. What makes crimes abroad even scarier is that you are foreign in those places, so you are not exactly sure of foreign people’s personalities, cultures, and laws. To be safe and certain, carry self-defense skills which hopefully, you will not be able to use because hopefully, you will never find yourself in a situation that requires them.

4. Keep a list of emergency numbers

Traveling alone can be freeing and fulfilling, but it can be challenging due to risks to personal safety. Chiefly, you should know who to call, where to go, and how to reach out to authorities when faced with safety and security troubles. One of the best safety tips for traveling alone is to keep a list of emergency numbers when traveling – both your local’s and your foreign travel destination’s active emergency contact information. Not the fastest way but email addresses can help too.

5. Have a safety plan

Last but not the least, have a safety plan to keep your personal safety. Hope not for any security issues to arise while you are traveling, but prepare safety measures you will take in case any happens. Better be safe than sorry. It’s also helpful to download a few apps for solo travelers to your phone before leaving.

Tips for traveling alone – final words

An unfamiliar local destination and a foreign country are both unknown to you. It’s really exciting to unravel them and discover great things, but you cannot be fully complacent and careless. You should not always trust everything and everyone. You should also equip yourself with knowledge about that destination, so you will not be totally alien to the place. Thus, you will not be taken advantage of by bandits.
