This year, I spent ten days in Malta in November – a little European winter getaway that turned out to be one of my favorite trips of the year. I was genuinely surprised by how much I loved this small Mediterranean island. Before visiting, I had already checked whether the island had something to offer for food lovers – and now, after my trip, I can confidently say that it absolutely does. Legligin – Valletta

If you’re wondering where to eat in Malta, and especially in Valletta, look no further than Legligin. It’s one of the most authentic restaurants in Malta’s capital and was one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Valletta. This cozy spot is tucked away in a small vaulted cellar and serves homemade Maltese dishes with lots of love and authenticity. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel at home – perfect for escaping the city heat and enjoying an unhurried meal.

You won’t find a regular à la carte menu here. Instead, Legligin offers surprise tasting menus inspired by Maltese cuisine – a 5-course lunch menu and a 7-course dinner menu. Before the meal starts, they’ll ask about allergies or dietary preferences, so you can relax knowing everything will suit your taste.

My boyfriend and I visited at lunchtime and absolutely loved our 5-course surprise menu. We started with a selection of small Maltese appetizers – olives, cheese, pickled peppers, homemade pesto with capers, and local sausage with bread. Then came a flavorful traditional fish soup, followed by pasta with cheese and pork in a rich sauce. The next dish was a Maltese specialty: rabbit with mashed potatoes. To finish, we could choose between desserts like tiramisu, crème brûlée, or white chocolate cake. After two hours of food bliss, we left full and happy.

If you’re in Valletta, I can’t recommend Legligin enough. Plan for a longer meal, and if you’re visiting in high season, definitely make a reservation – especially for dinner.

BeBirgu – Birgu (Vittoriosa)

If you take one of the little water taxis across from Valletta to the Three Cities – something I highly recommend – you’ll arrive in the beautiful town of Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa). Just a short walk from the marina, at the main square, you’ll find BeBirgu, a stylish restaurant located in a historic 16th-century building that once served as a Knights’ auberge.

Inside, the vaulted stone interiors give the place a rustic, authentic charm, while the outdoor seating in the courtyard and on the lively square is perfect for soaking up the atmosphere. The restaurant’s menu combines local and Mediterranean cuisine with a modern twist.

I ordered a delicious pizza and a giant Aperol Spritz – honestly, it was almost twice the size of a regular one! The prices were more than fair, especially considering the central location and beautiful setting. Whether for lunch, dinner, or just a drink, BeBirgu is definitely worth a stop when exploring the Three Cities.

Amami – Mellieha

Located in the heart of Mellieha, Amami is easily one of the best restaurants in Malta for Asian fusion cuisine and has quickly become one of my favorite places for dinner in the north of Malta. This elegant restaurant offers a fusion of Japanese and Asian-inspired dishes, and every bite was spot on. I tried the sushi, poke bowl, and bao buns – all fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented.

The highlight, however, is the view. The restaurant’s outdoor terrace overlooks Mellieha Bay, and dining here during sunset feels truly special. The atmosphere is relaxed yet upscale, making it perfect for a romantic dinner or a slightly fancier evening out.

If you love sushi or creative Asian food, this is your spot. I’d recommend making a reservation for dinner, especially on weekends.

M31 – Mellieha

We came to M31 for brunch, and it was the perfect choice. The restaurant is part of a small boutique hotel and has a cozy, modern vibe – stylish but relaxed. I had the salmon bagel, and my boyfriend ordered the panini with mozzarella. Both were delicious, with generous portions and fresh ingredients.

They also serve great coffee and have a nice selection of smoothies and cocktails. The staff was warm and welcoming, and the whole place had that laid-back Sunday-morning energy that makes you want to linger. Whether for breakfast, brunch, or lunch, M31 is a lovely little spot to start your day in Mellieha.

Sea View Café/ Bar – Mellieha

We stopped here for a quick coffee, but I could easily imagine coming back for cocktails or a light meal. The Sea View Café & Bar lives up to its name – it has an incredible view over Mellieha Bay and the coastline.

Located near the parish church in Mellieha Heights, it’s a great place to unwind after exploring the town or visiting some of the best beaches in Malta. The vibe is relaxed, prices are reasonable, and I’d say it’s one of the best sunset spots in Mellieha for drinks with a view.

Villager by Munchies – Mellieha

Villager by Munchies was a cozy dinner spot during our November stay. Since evenings in Malta can be a little cool that time of year, the staff lit an outdoor fire, which made the atmosphere incredibly warm and inviting.

I ordered a pinsa, which was delicious – light, fluffy, and perfectly baked. The menu also includes pasta, burgers, and Mediterranean dishes. The restaurant has a stylish interior and a local neighborhood feel, making it a great place for a relaxed evening out.

The staff were super friendly and attentive, and the combination of good food, cozy atmosphere, and the crackling fire made this one of my favorite nights in Mellieha.

Munchies Mellieha Bay

If you spend a beach day at Mellieha Bay and are wondering where to eat in Malta by the sea, Munchies Mellieha Bay is the answer. The restaurant sits right by the water on a wooden deck, so you can enjoy your meal with the sound of the waves below.

We came for lunch and had pasta and burgers – both excellent. The service was quick, the portions generous, and the atmosphere laid-back. It’s also a great place for a sundowner drink, as you can watch the light reflect on the sea in the evening.

Munchies is popular with both locals and tourists, so it’s worth coming early if you want a good spot by the water.

Apple’s Eye Restaurant – Golden Bay

We visited Apple’s Eye after spending the afternoon at Golden Bay Beach, one of Malta’s most famous beaches. The restaurant overlooks the beach and is a great spot for both casual lunch and dinner.

It’s a busy place, especially on weekends, but the service was impressively fast. I had the fish burger, and my boyfriend went for a pizza – both were really good. What makes this place special is the view: you can watch the sunset over Golden Bay right from your table.

If you plan to visit, come around an hour before sunset, grab a drink, and enjoy one of the most beautiful views on the island.

Singita – Riviera Beach

Singita is one of the most popular spots on Malta’s west coast – and once you arrive, you’ll instantly see why. It’s a beach lounge with relaxed music, stylish décor, and a breathtaking view over the bay. The atmosphere is easygoing yet chic, with a focus on sustainability and local ingredients.

I ordered the Hawaii Bowl with salmon, and it was amazing – super fresh, colorful, and packed with flavor. The drinks were also great, and it’s one of those places where you can easily spend hours just soaking in the vibe.

Singita doesn’t take reservations, but you can join an online waiting list. We did that and spent some time on the beach before getting a table notification. My tip: avoid peak sunset time if you want a quieter experience – that’s when it gets the most crowded.

Fontanella Tea Garden – Mdina

No list of the best restaurants in Malta would be complete without mentioning Fontanella Tea Garden in Mdina. This iconic café is famous for its homemade cakes and unbeatable terrace views stretching across the island. It’s the perfect spot for coffee and dessert after exploring the medieval streets of Mdina, the “Silent City.”

Terrazzo – Gozo

Wondering where to eat in Malta with the best views? The Terrazzo Restaurant & Beach Bar in Xlendi, Gozo, was one of the most beautiful dining experiences of my Malta trip. The terrace overlooks Xlendi Bay, so you can watch swimmers in the water below while enjoying your meal.

We shared the hummus platter with bread to start, and both ordered fresh salads as mains. The food was simple but delicious, and the staff even surprised us with a small amuse-bouche from the kitchen. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming – the kind of place where you just want to linger a little longer with a glass of wine.

If you’re visiting Gozo, I highly recommend making time for lunch or dinner here. Go for a table by the railing if possible – the views are unbeatable.
