Best Time to Visit Panama
The best time to spend one week in Panama is during the dry season from December to April. This is when the weather is perfect for exploring beaches, hiking in the mountains, or walking through Panama City. The rainy season, from May to November, brings lush green landscapes and fewer tourists. Rain showers are usually short, and some destinations like Boquete actually look more beautiful in the rain, with waterfalls and coffee plantations in full bloom.
My trip to Panama was in August. As you can see in the photos in this article, the landscapes are lush green, and the waterfalls are absolutely stunning. For the island paradise of Bocas del Toro, however, I would have liked more sunshine and would love to visit Panama again in the dry season.

How to Get Around Panama in 7 Days
For only one week in Panama, efficiency is key. Domestic flights save time, especially between Panama City and Bocas del Toro. Shuttles or private transfers (like Hello Travel Panama) are the easiest way to reach mountain towns like Boquete. Boats are essential for the islands, particularly in Bocas del Toro and San Blas. Renting a car is less recommended unless you are experienced with Panamanian roads and plan to explore remote areas.

What to Pack for Panama
Before you dive into your adventure, it’s a good idea to prepare well for the diverse climates and activities you’ll encounter. From humid beaches in Bocas del Toro to cooler highlands in Boquete, packing smart makes all the difference. 7-Day Panama Itinerary
Most travelers enter the country via Panama City. If you are coming from Costa Rica, an overland crossing at Sixaola/Guabito is possible. From there, you can take a bus to Almirante and then a short boat ride to Bocas del Toro. Starting your trip in Bocas del Toro is ideal for a one-week itinerary, as it allows you to experience the islands right away without spending too much time on travel.
Bocas del Toro (2 Nights)
Bocas del Toro is the Caribbean gem of Panama. The islands are dotted with colorful wooden houses, and turquoise waters invite swimming and snorkeling. Even after a few hours on the boat from Almirante, the relaxed island vibe is infectious.

Explore Red Frog Beach, where you can combine soft sand and calm waters with a rainforest hike, spotting monkeys and birds. Starfish Beach is perfect for snorkeling, and a day trip to the Zapatilla Islands offers untouched white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. The town itself has small bars and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood in a laid-back atmosphere.

Accommodations:
- Low Budget: Selina Bocas del Toro
- Medium: Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel, Hotel Bocas Town
- Luxury: Punta Caracol Acqua Lodge, Red Frog Beach Island Resort
Bajo Boquete (2 Nights)
Bajo Boquete is a highland town surrounded by cloud forests and coffee plantations. The air is cool, perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. Coffee farms, such as Finca Lerida and Don Pepe, offer guided tours where you can see coffee production firsthand.

Hiking options include the Lost Waterfalls Trail for a scenic walk or a challenging ascent of Volcan Baru to witness both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from the summit. For a more relaxing experience, visit Caldera Hot Springs after exploring the town and surrounding hills. Boquete’s town center is charming, with cafes, bakeries, and artisan shops, providing a calm contrast to the island life you experienced in Bocas.

Accommodations:
- Low Budget: Bambuda Castle
- Medium: The Inn at Palo Alto
- Luxury: Hotel Panamonte
El Valle de Anton (2 Nights)
El Valle de Anton sits in the crater of an extinct volcano, offering a unique blend of nature, wildlife, and adventure activities. Hike to India Dormida or the local waterfalls, explore the Sunday market for crafts and local food, and visit the butterfly and orchid gardens.
For those seeking adventure, ziplining through the forest canopy or hiking up Cerro Gaital is a highlight. The town itself is small but has excellent restaurants, cafés, and small boutique hotels, making it a relaxing stop between Boquete and Panama City.

Accommodations:
- Low Budget: Hostal El Cantón
- Medium: The Golden Frog Inn
- Luxury: Hotel La Compania del Valle
Panama City (1–2 Nights)
Panama City is a modern metropolis with a historic core. The skyline contrasts with the colonial architecture of Casco Viejo. Visiting the Panama Canal at Miraflores Locks is essential to see massive ships pass through and learn the canal’s history.

Casco Viejo is ideal for walking, dining, and people-watching in charming plazas. The Amador Causeway offers scenic views and a chance to relax with oceanfront cafés. For nightlife, rooftop bars and contemporary restaurants showcase the city’s modern energy. Panama City balances history, culture, and urban life, making it a perfect ending to your week in Panama.

Accommodations:
- Low Budget: Viajero Casco Viejo Hostel
- Medium: Tantalo Hotel, AmazINN Places Casco Viejo Pool and Rooftop XIV
- Luxury: American Trade Hotel
