This month, I traveled to the German capital to attend ITB Berlin, one of the largest tourism trade fairs in the world. For my stay during the event, I was looking for accommodation that was well connected to the exhibition grounds located in the western part of Berlin, while still being close to the city’s main attractions. It was also important for me to have a quiet place to relax in the evening and to start the day with a good breakfast before heading to the trade fair.

Anyone who knows me already knows that I’m not a big fan of huge hotels. I usually prefer smaller boutique hotels with around 10 to 100 rooms that have their own unique charm. I simply feel more comfortable there than in large hotel chains with thousands of standardized rooms.
With 64 rooms, the fjord Hotel Berlin is a classic mid-range boutique hotel that stands out with its modern style and Scandinavian-inspired minimalist design. The reception area already creates a welcoming atmosphere with its birch trunks, cozy armchairs, and bright colors.
Central Location in Berlin Tiergarten
The fjord Hotel Berlin is located in the Tiergarten district of Berlin, which is part of Berlin-Mitte and is considered one of the most central yet quieter residential and hotel areas of the capital. Not only is a large part of the German government district located here, but also Berlin’s largest and most famous park, which gave the area its name: the Tiergarten. Situated on a quiet side street between Potsdamer Platz and Gleisdreieck Park, the fjord Hotel combines a very central location with a peaceful atmosphere.
Getting to the fjord Hotel:
I traveled from Frankfurt to Berlin by Intercity-Express and was happy that after arriving, I didn’t have to cross the entire city again. From Berlin Hauptbahnhof, you can reach the fjord Hotel by bus in less than 20 minutes. If you arrive in Berlin by plane, you can also use the well-developed public transport system and reach the accommodation in under an hour.
Access to Attractions, the Exhibition Center, and More
The hotel is perfectly located for both trade fair visitors, business travelers, and tourists visiting Berlin. Three different subway stations are within walking distance: Gleisdreieck Station, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park Station, and Kurfürstenstraße Station.
It took me about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the exhibition grounds, taking the Berlin U-Bahn U2 line from Gleisdreieck to Theodor-Heuss-Platz Station. In my opinion, the subway is the best way to get around Berlin quickly. You usually never wait longer than five minutes for a train, and it takes you across the entire city. The Berlin S-Bahn network and bus routes are also well developed, so you can easily get almost anywhere. Of course, as is often the case in big cities, it’s not always the cleanest, but that’s something you generally have to expect when visiting Berlin.
For travelers who prefer to explore Berlin in a more active way, there’s also good news: you can rent bicycles directly from the hotel for just €12 per day and cycle around the city.
If you prefer a more comfortable option or don’t feel like using public transport late in the evening, you can also use Uber, which is becoming increasingly common in Berlin. As a solo female traveler, I can definitely say that I always felt very safe in the area around the fjord Hotel, even in the evening.
Minimalistic & Modern Rooms
I stayed in the “Schönes M” room category, which I would recommend for both solo travelers and couples. The room is simply furnished without much fuss, but it has everything you need. For example, I was able to leave my shampoo and hairdryer at home, which I was very grateful for since space in my small suitcase is always quite limited.
I especially liked the large windows, which make the room feel very bright and welcoming. The bed was also very comfortable, even though I’m not necessarily a fan of two mattresses in a double bed. What I appreciated the most was how quiet it was to sleep here, even though you’re right in the middle of Berlin.
In addition to the smallest room category (“Schönes S”) and my room (“Schönes M”), there are three other room options, each with its own advantages. The “Schönes L” room, with a double bed and a sofa bed, is also suitable for families, while the “Schönes Bad mit Blick” room stands out with a very aesthetic bathtub and a small terrace. If you’d like to enjoy a panoramic view over Berlin during your stay, I recommend booking the “Schöner Blick” room, which features a 30 m² rooftop terrace with a daybed.
Amazing Breakfast & Free Coffee
For me, the breakfast at the fjord Hotel Berlin was a real highlight of my stay, and that’s saying something since I’m not usually the type who enjoys long, elaborate breakfasts. The extensive breakfast buffet is available from 6:30 to 10:30 am on weekdays and from 7:00 to 11:00 am on weekends. On the days I visited the trade fair, I still had plenty of time in the morning to fuel up for the day.
What I particularly liked was the focus on organic, regional, and mostly homemade products, which vary depending on the season, as well as the wide selection of sweet and savory dishes. You can really tell that a lot of attention to detail goes into preparing the breakfast. I couldn’t help but smile, for example, when I saw the eggs with little smiley faces drawn on them.
Some of my personal breakfast favorites included the chia quark with raspberries, the delicious and fresh fruit salad, and the mini multigrain rolls. I also noticed the large selection of vegan options as well as gluten-free alternatives, which can be freshly prepared upon request.
The hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant for lunch or dinner. However, complimentary coffee and tea are available in the lobby or breakfast area every day from 1 pm to 9 pm. It’s also a nice spot to sit down and get some work done in a relaxed atmosphere.
