GR221 Dry Stone Route
When it comes to hiking trails in Mallorca, the GR221 Dry Stone route is the island’s crowning glory. Measuring 135 km in length, this demanding trek takes you through the Tramuntana mountains along the western coast. The average hiker completes the walk-in around eight days, and there are plenty of accommodation options along the way.
As you’d expect along such a lengthy track, some parts will be much more challenging than others, and some of the stages are best taken on with the help of a local guide. For those who are interested in seeing the archeological sites of interest dotted along with parts of the trail, but don’t have enough time to complete it all, consider tackling one of the six variants of the GR221 route.
Torrent de Pareis Gorge
The Torrent de Pareis Gorge trail is one of the more challenging walks on offer across the island. Though it’s not the longest in Mallorca, taking around five hours to complete, there are lots of tricky elements along the way that thrill-seekers will love, including tackling testing terrains and navigating tight gaps in the rocks.
Before attempting this walk, is it important to carefully plan your expedition, as several factors can make it dangerous unless you’re aware of them. The best time to take on the walk is during the drier summer months, as the gorge is at risk of flooding at other times of the year. Come prepared for soaring temperatures and very little shade – dress appropriately and be sure to take plenty of water.
Hiking along the dried riverbed will present challenges. Still, it also offers a unique opportunity to see the countryside from a completely different perspective, making this one of the most spectacular walks on a Mallorca holiday.
Top tips for hiking in Mallorca
- Check the difficulty of the route. Before attempting any new route, you should check with local or online guides detailing the difficulty of the route. Many of the tracks around the island are very remote and often take you to places with poor phone signals, so make sure that you are capable of completing them before starting.
- Prepare for all weather conditions. Not only should you prepare for the scorching heat if you’re hiking in summer, but particularly if you’re visiting the Tramuntana mountains, expect the weather to turn quickly with wind speeds often unexpectedly picking up, so dress and pack your backpack appropriately.
- Stick to the signposts. With many sections of different routes passing through private land, it is important to stick to the signposts that will guide you along the public paths. Some areas have better signposts than others, so if you have any concerns, use the expertise of a local guide to ensure you don’t encounter any problems along the way.
