Is Malta a Beach Destination?
Even though Malta isn’t primarily a beach destination, it offers a really nice mix: historic cities like Valletta and Mdina, rugged cliffs, peaceful bays, and incredibly clear water for swimming or snorkeling. You won’t find endless sandy beaches everywhere, but the island’s coastline still has plenty of lovely places to enjoy the sea.
I visited in early November, when the water was already too cold for me (but surprisingly, many people were still happily swimming). The weather was sunny and warm enough to walk around, explore the bays, and enjoy all the beaches without the usual summer crowds.
If you’re planning to visit for beach days, keep in mind: high season (June–August) is extremely crowded. Spring and fall are perfect for exploring the beaches without stress. And if swimming and snorkeling are your priorities, then summer is definitely the best season.
Malta doesn’t have many sandy beaches, and most are located in the north of the main island or on Gozo. Also, don’t forget to include Gozo and Comino when planning your trip, as some of the island nation’s best beaches are there.

Mellieha Bay is Malta’s largest sandy beach and a paradise for families, sun lovers, and anyone who enjoys long, shallow shorelines. The bay feels spacious and relaxed, and you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, and beach clubs along the promenade. It’s one of the easiest beaches to spend an entire day at. Sunbeds, umbrellas, snack places… everything is there. Despite being popular, it never felt overwhelming because of its size.

Golden Bay

Riviera Beach
Riviera Beach (Ghajn Tuffieha) sits right next to Golden Bay, but it feels more peaceful and wild. The viewpoint above the beach is stunning, especially during golden hour. You walk down a long staircase to reach the sand, which makes it a little less crowded. It’s a great place for people who enjoy a more natural setting, and you can even take surf lessons when conditions allow.

Blue Lagoon Beach
The Blue Lagoon on Comino is famous for a reason. The water is unbelievably clear, like a giant natural swimming pool. The bright turquoise colors are almost unreal. The easiest way to get there is by boat, and I can highly recommend a private tour with GOZOblu for a more relaxed experience. In summer, arrive early to avoid the crowds. There are small food stalls, and the snorkeling around the caves is beautiful.

Santa Maria Bay, Comino
Santa Maria Bay is the quieter, more laid-back sibling of the Blue Lagoon. It’s more remote and has a peaceful, natural vibe. A small chapel sits nearby, and while a hotel is being built in the area, the beach still feels untouched. There’s a drink stand, but otherwise it’s a simple, calm place to enjoy the sea.

Ramla Bay, Gozo
Ramla Bay is the best beach on Gozo and is famous for its unique red sand. The beach is wide, relaxed, and feels less developed than many others. It’s perfect if you want a more natural beach day with enough space to spread out.

Xlendi Beach

Popeye Village: A fun and photogenic spot with colorful film-set houses and a small bay for swimming. Great for photos and families.
