I’ve visited Arequipa during my Peru trip, and I fell in love with the town instantly. Whether you’re passing through on your way to Cusco or planning a short visit, I’ve created a 1-day Arequipa itinerary that is perfect for first-time travelers who want to experience the best of this stunning city in just 24 hours.
The charming town of Arequipa is often referred to as La Ciudad Blanca—The White City—thanks to its buildings made from bright white volcanic stone. From vibrant markets and rooftop views to ancient monasteries and fluffy alpacas, here’s how to make the most of your one day in Arequipa!

How to Get to Arequipa?
Arequipa is located in the South of Peru and is well-connected by bus and plane. Depending on where you’re coming from, here are your best options:
From Lima:
The fastest way to reach Arequipa from Lima is by plane, with daily flights that take around 1.5 hours. I would recommend booking an Airport Arrival Transfer in advance. If you’re on a budget or prefer overland travel, buses take around 16–18 hours and offer comfortable overnight options.
From Cusco:
Direct flights from Cusco to Arequipa take about 1 hour. Alternatively, a scenic bus ride through the Andes takes around 10 hours. Choose a day bus if you want to enjoy the mountainous landscapes along the way.
From Nazca:
Nazca to Arequipa is a long but manageable journey by bus, taking around 9–10 hours. This route is best done overnight to maximize your time in Arequipa.
From Puno:
Traveling from Puno to Arequipa by bus takes roughly 6–7 hours. It’s a good route to take after visiting Lake Titicaca.
When to Visit Arequipa?
The best time to visit Arequipa is during the dry season, from April to November, when you’ll enjoy sunny days and cooler evenings. The city’s pleasant year-round climate makes it an ideal stop on any Peru itinerary, but visiting during these months ensures clear skies for the best views of the surrounding volcanoes. I’ve visited the town in early October and was very happy with my choice!
Where to Stay in Arequipa?
If you’re only in town for a day, location is everything. I stayed at QASA Arequipa by NOMAD Hotel, a modern, stylish, and centrally located hotel just a short walk from the Plaza de Armas and the San Camilo Market. For me, it was the perfect base for my Arequipa adventure, with comfortable rooms, an excellent breakfast, and rooftop views.
Arequipa Itinerary for 1 Day
Here’s how to explore the highlights of Arequipa in one day:
Mercado San Camilo
Start your day in Arequipa at the San Camilo Market, just a short walk from the center. This bustling market offers a window into local life and is a great place to grab a freshly pressed juice or try a Chicharrón sandwich—a Peruvian classic with crispy pork, onions, peppers, and sauces, all served in a fluffy bun.
The market is housed in a massive structure designed by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the Eiffel Tower guy), and inside you’ll find everything from exotic fruits to local cheeses and meats.
Plaza de Armas & Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa
Head next to the Plaza de Armas, the beating heart of the city. This stunning square is surrounded by colonial architecture, palm trees, and views of snow-capped volcanoes like Misti and Chachani. Don’t miss a visit to the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa, an impressive structure dating back to the 1600s.
While you’re here, cool off with a scoop of Queso Helado—a traditional Arequipeñan dessert made from milk, cinnamon, and vanilla. Despite the name (“cheese ice cream”), there’s no cheese involved—just creamy, spiced deliciousness.
Rooftop Mirador Misti
For a panoramic view of the city and volcanoes, make your way to one of Arequipa’s rooftop cafes or viewpoints. The Mirador Misti, accessible via various cafes or hotel rooftops, offers an unbeatable view of the city framed by the iconic Misti Volcano. Grab a coffee or a fresh juice and soak it in.
Monasterio de Santa Catalina
Next, head to one of Arequipa’s most iconic landmarks: the Santa Catalina Monastery. Spanning an entire city block, this centuries-old convent feels like a city within a city, with colorful alleys, courtyards, and beautifully preserved rooms. A visit here offers a peaceful break and insight into the religious and colonial history of Peru.
Mundo Alpaca
No Arequipa itinerary is complete without meeting some of its fluffiest residents. Mundo Alpaca is a small cultural complex where you can learn about alpaca wool production and even feed real alpacas and llamas. The perfect activity for your Peru bucket list! And the best of all? Entry is free! It’s a fun, informative, and photogenic stop perfect for travelers of all ages.
Yanahuara Scenic Overlook
Wrap up your 1-day Arequipa itinerary with a short ride (or walk) to Yanahuara, a quiet neighborhood known for its white stone arches and unbeatable views of the Misti Volcano. The Yanahuara Mirador is especially stunning at sunset, offering a peaceful place to reflect on your day in Arequipa.
Dinner Recommendations
End your one day in Arequipa with a delicious dinner at one of Arequipa’s top restaurants. Here are a few great options:
- Zig Zag – Known for their meat platters and sizzling volcanic stone grills. Perfect for meat lovers.
- Chicha por Gastón Acurio – A high-end Peruvian fusion restaurant by one of Peru’s most famous chefs.
- Pasta Canteen – Great for a cozy, affordable dinner with fresh, homemade pasta.
- La Petite Francaise – A charming spot for crepes, salads, and wine, perfect if you’re craving something light.
Final Words on this 1-Day Arequipa Itinerary
Arequipa is often overlooked in favor of more famous Peruvian destinations. However, I think you can easily spend a couple of days in Arequipa enjoying the laid-back atmosphere and strolling around the cute cafés and restaurants. I really enjoyed my time in Arequipa!
On another note, the town is also the perfect base for some unforgettable day trips from Arequipa, including the breathtaking Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest canyons.
